Dining on Eyeballs and Smelly Feet

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

A few years ago, Jenna and I wrote a book called, the Good Knight Night Book.  Lately Jrb has really enjoyed reading it and solving the many puzzles (not to mention it glows in the dark which is really exciting in our house!)  So it is fitting that I include this recipe for Edible eyeballs.  Thanks to candy expert and historian Beth Kimmerle for this terrific craft idea.  For more edible craft ideas visit Beth’s website at  www.bethkimmerle.com.

Now all I need is a good “smelly feet” recipe.  Happy Halloween everyone.  Be sure to check out my segment this friday at 11:45 on WGN.   I am making Boootiful Halloween crafts….

A spooky treat that will delight your kids

A spooky treat that will delight your kids

Here’s the recipe:

Materials:

  • Small, white powdered sugar doughnuts
  • Tube of red icing
  • 7 oz bag of Life Savers gummies
  • 1 bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions:

  • Place doughnuts on a platter and cover the center holes with a thin layer of red icing. The diameter should be slightly larger than the Kife Saver candy.
  • Place the Life Saver candy on top of the red icing and push gently to secure in place.
  • Top the Life Saver Candy with a chocolate chip.
  • Make the eyeballs scary by drawing lines from the center of the doughnut to the outer edge with red icing.
  • Finish the treat by poking each donut with a lollipop stick and arranging them in a bowl of candy filled with gummies or candy corn.

Dessert Darling

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

How could I not like a website about desserts?  www.dessertdarling.com is the Sweet Tooth with the Sweet Truth.  Personally, I just like that someone is kind enough to spend time tasting desserts and blogging about it!  If your dream was to be a dessert critic one day, this website is for you!  It is also super fun to read about famous desserts and not gain a pound.

So check it out and let us know what you think.

Pumpkin Dip with Gingersnaps

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Good Morning.  Today I am working on an upcoming article about Thanksgiving crafts and eats for the Pioneer Press.  I LOVE Thanksgiving food especially the desserts!  One recipe I came across that sounds delicious is called:  Pumpkin Dip and Gingersnaps.  It isn’t going to work with my article as I decided to stay away from food ideas this time around, so I wanted to share it here:  If you and / or your kids like to “dip” and “eat” this could be the dessert for you!

Enjoy,

Beth

RECIPE:

Pumpkin Dip with Ginger Snaps

1 package (8 oz.) 1/3 less fat cream cheese, softened to room temperature

1 can (16 oz) pumpkin

2 cups powdered sugar

1 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice

1 cup light whipped topping

1 bag purchased ginger snaps

In a mixing bowl, mix softened cream cheese with pumpkin, powdered sugar and pumpkin pie spice. Fold in 1 cup light whipped topping. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. Serve with ginger snaps.

TIP: To fold in whipped topping, use a spatula and lightly mix with cream cheese mixture to keep it fluffy.

How exciting for us to be featured on Tip Junkie today.  This is one of my favorite sites as it always has “why didn’t I think about that” ideas that make life easier / cheaper / better.  My favorite section is their handmade gift ideas which today includes our “LACY ROCKS” photo idea. Thanks Jenna for coming up with this great idea way back when!
